Compliance Guidelines for Corrosive Products
Overview
Part 1 of the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 introduces strict controls on the sale and supply of certain corrosive substances to address crimes related to acid attacks.
Under the legislation, it is a criminal offence to sell a regulated corrosive product to anyone under the age of 18. Businesses must take reasonable steps to verify the purchaser's age.
Key Compliance Requirements
- Internet & Remote Sales: Sales over the internet are strongly discouraged unless a robust, legally compliant online age-verification system is in place.
- Trade Counter Sales: Over-the-counter sales must only be processed after satisfactory age verification has been completed.
- Deliveries: Affected products must only be handed over to individuals whose age has been verified.
Accepted Forms of ID: Photo ID includes a passport, an EU photocard driving licence, or other approved documents (such as those specified under Scottish statutory guidance). Please refer to official government guidance for full compliance details.
